Joseph Stalin was a Georgian-Russian revolutionary who served as a member of a triumvirate responsible for the defense of Tsaritsyn. Both him and Kliment Voroshilov would be killed in the resulting battle, leaving Leon Trotsky to organize the retreat. Once the Bolsheviks had won the civil war and the Soviet Union was declared, Stalin became a popular 'revolutionary martyr' within state propaganda. The city of Tsaritsyn was renamed Stalingrad in his honor.
