François Mitterrand was a French politician and lawyer who first came to prominence under the Regency. During the early 1940s, he was responsible for sentencing many so-called 'enemies of the state' to be executed, making him a feared figure. After Charles de Gaulle's pro-Republican military coup, he was one of many notable Regency figures to be hanged for treason against the new Republic.
