The First Chinese Civil War was a conflict that lasted from 1927-1936. It involved various Communist insurgents fighting against the ruling Nationalists of the Republic of China. Due to backing from the Soviet Union, the Communists, under the leadership of Mao Zedong, succeeded. The Nationalists were sent into exile on the island of Taiwan, which was renamed to the Republic of China. The former Republic of China was transformed into the People's Republic of China.
